Everyone has an opinion on sizes when it comes to boards. Remember that when people talk about sizes, they are generally discussing the width of the boards, not the length as this rarely varies huge amounts.
Most beginner skaters start themselves on a narrower board such as a 7.5” (7 ½“), this is because it provides you with less of a board to get round during a flip trick and will generally spin faster. However, once you start nailing these flip tricks and start applying some style, most skaters will progress their board size upwards in stages. The thicker the board, the more control you have which allows for more style. Plus you have more to land on. So the thicker sizes, such as the 7.75” (7 ¾“) become more popular with the more experienced skaters. Some even opt for an 8” which is ideal for mini-ramp or transitional skating. But, at the end of the day, its all down to personal opinion after experiencing them all. Some skaters come to a stage about mid way through the range and just find it more comfortable on a narrower board such as a 7.5" or 7.625".
To be honest, if you are at the stage where you are not sure on which is for you, its not going to make a difference what size you get! Just remember to experiment on different sizee.
